Watada's a Hero, Hoh's a Tool

I learned of Watada’s release from the Army and Officer Hoh’s resignation the same day.  At first I was equally exhilarated by the stories, but then Hoh’s came to seem suspect.  As Arthur Silber more eloquently puts it, Watada is the genuine hero, while Hoh’s resignation lacks any underlying moral principles.

The main point of Hoh’s four-page resignation, which many commentators are fawning over, seems to be this:  that he is Not a Wussy.  (I’d put it in stronger terms, but I’m trying to keep this a family-friendly blog, for the 3-year-olds who might be reading.)  I’m surprised “Matthew Hoh – Totally Not a Wussy” wasn’t in the footer for each page.  As Silber did, I found the following passage the most indicative of this attitude:

“I’m not some peacenik, pot-smoking hippie who wants everyone to be in love,” Hoh said. Although he said his time in Zabul was the “second-best job I’ve ever had,” his dominant experience is from the Marines, where many of his closest friends still serve.

“There are plenty of dudes who need to be killed,” he said of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. “I was never more happy than when our Iraq team whacked a bunch of guys.”

Basically, Hoh is not against killing per se; he is thinking it unwise to continue in a “wasteful” war.  He is even willing to take a cut in pay and prestige to do it.  I haven’t looked, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this got the career blogs humming.  It seems few can fathom turning down a promotion.

Perhaps because his resignation lacks principle, he is getting the bulk of the media coverage.  Watada’s resistance and release is getting less play.  Is it because his stance is the more genuinely liberating one?

“I believe the only real God-given right we have is the freedom to choose,” Watada says. “And when we take that away from ourselves, then we put ourselves in an invisible prison that nobody else imposes on us except for ourselves. When you tell yourself again that you do have a choice–I could go to prison for it, I could be tortured, I could die for it, but I have that choice and I can make it–then that invisible prison kind of lifts off, and you feel free. I felt so free when I told myself that I have a choice.”

It is good to be reminded of this.  When we complain that the government is oppressing us, we concede that our freedom comes from the government.  That leaves us even less free than before.

An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities aka Hatch Act

“…The Hatch Act of 1939 is a United States federal law whose main provision is to prohibit federal employees (civil servants) from engaging in partisan political activity. Named after Senator Carl Hatch of New Mexico, the law was officially known as An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities.

The act precluded federal employees from membership in “any political organization which advocates the overthrow of our constitutional form of government.” During the Second Red Scare, this designation was interpreted to include communist and labor organizations. …”

“…The original Act forbids intimidation or bribery of voters and restricted political campaign activities by federal employees. It prohibits using any public funds designated for relief or public works for electoral purposes. It also forbids officials paid with federal funds from using promises of jobs, promotion, financial assistance, contracts, or any other benefit to coerce campaign contributions or political support.

The most restrictive measure was brought about by Republicans in the Senate. It dictates that persons below the policymaking level in the executive branch of the federal government must not only refrain from political practices that would be illegal for any citizen but must abstain from “any active part” in political campaigns.

An amendment on July 19, 1940 extended coverage to state and local employees whose salaries include any federal funds. This amendment also set an annual ceiling of $3 million for political parties’ campaign expenditures and $5,000 for individual campaign contributions. …”

What Did The White House Do Wrong? by Hans von Spakovsky and Elliot S. Berke “…By seeking to enlist the private sector in lobbying for the President’s agenda, the alleged conduct may have violated the Anti-Lobbying Act (18 U.S.C. §1913), which as Ben Shapiro pointed out in a previous piece, explicitly provides:

No part of the money appropriated by any enactment of Congress shall, in the absence of express authorization by Congress, be used directly or indirectly to pay for any personal service, advertisement, telegram, telephone, letter, printed or written matter, or other device, intended or designed to influence in any manner a Member of Congress, a jurisdiction, or an official of any government, to favor, adopt, or oppose by vote or otherwise, any legislation, law, ratification, policy, or appropriation, whether before or after the introduction of any bill, measure or resolution proposing such legislation, law, ratification, policy or appropriation.

The Anti-Lobbying Act, according to government handbooks, prevents government employees from engaging in “substantial ‘grass roots’ lobbying campaigns … expressly urging individuals to contact government officials in support of or opposition to legislation …. Provid[ing] administrative support for lobbing activities of private organizations”

It is important to note that 18 U.S.C. §1913 only applies to federal officers or employees and not to the private recipients of federal grants, contracts or other federal disbursements.  Thus, while the artists who responded to the NEA’s request for political help may not have violated this particular provision of federal law, Yosi Sergant, who was apparently the main person behind the NEA phone call, and other members of the White House staff who were involved in the May 12 meeting at the White House, may very well have violated §1913.  Those staffers included “people very close to the President” according to Mike Strautmanis, Chief of Staff for the Office of Public Engagement.  Punishment for such a violation can be severe – a civil penalty of not less than $10,000 and not more than $100,000 for each violation. …”

The latest Breitbart blockbuster has been released. The huge post by Patrick Courrielche on BigGovernment.com includes comprehensive transcripts and audios, as well as excerpted key segments. White House official Buffy Wicks, who works for Valerie Jarrett, the insider’s insider at the White House, is clearly directing political art (“specific tasks”) be produced. Jarrett is close to both Michelle and Barack Obama. In the following segment, Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, clearly identifies this arts group as a pro-Obama collective and warns them of some “specific asks” that will be delivered later in the meeting.

From Huff Po a report that Wicks is well wired into the SEIU: Many of the people in charge of the SEIU funded anti-WalMart movement, such as the imposing Buffy Wicks, have moved on to work for Obama, who was also funded by the SEIU. Peak Oil – The Risks

Eighty-five million barrels a day.

That’s the world’s current production of crude oil…and that may very well be close to the world’s PEAK production of crude oil. Although the recession caused a temporary decrease in consumption, demand is already bouncing back toward pre-crisis levels. Too bad production isn’t.

“Can’t we get more than 85 million barrels?” some folks are bound to wonder. Let’s look into that…

A couple weeks ago, I attended the 2009 international conference of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas (ASPO), out in Denver. Here’s the long and short of it. We’re in trouble. With a capital “T,” and that rhymes with “P,” and that stands for Peak Oil. By every measure, the world’s output of crude oil peaked between 2005 and 2007.

Yes, the worldwide total output of what we generically call “oil” has risen – slightly – in recent years. But that’s because there are increasing volumes of natural gas liquids (NGLs) in the mix, plus unconventional oil like what the global marketplace obtains from Canada’s oil sands. But the production of oil – actual oil – has peaked already. The future of conventional petroleum output is downhill, even with the future output from the deep-water offshore discoveries.

“There’s no such thing as West Texas Intermediate [WTI] oil anymore,” Peak Oil apologist, Matt Simmons, moaned to the ASPO conference attendees. Instead, the pipeline crossroads like Cushing, Okla., have become little more than “crude oil pharmacies.”

In other words, as the quality of the crude from the traditional US oil patch continues to degrade, oilmen must mix and match their product with “sweeter” forms of crude if they hope to sell it as the premium-priced WTI. Thus, operators at Cushing take whatever oil they can obtain from one place, plus whatever oil they can obtain from another place. They mix and match, and blend it all with synthetic crude from Canada. Maybe they add some imported oil juice and then send it down the line as WTI.

Along these same lines, Venezuelan economist Carlos Rossi stated to ASPO his analysis of oil trends in the US. “You are worried about your foreign oil imports now,” he said. “You in the US import about 65% of your oil today. You don’t like it. But if you follow the clear trends, by 2025, you’ll be importing about 92% of your oil. You’ll like that even less.” No doubt.

The market meltdown and world recession of the past year has bought some time. But the planet is still staring at an energy problem that’s coming down the tracks like a runaway freight train.

Sure, there’s a lot more oil “out there”…as in WAY out there – 150 miles offshore, beneath 8,000 feet of water and 20,000 feet of rock and salt. Yes, that offshore resource is out there, but it’s super hard to extract.

And so what? Aren’t the world’s oil companies busy developing these massive offshore deposits? Yes, but this development will take decades. It’ll take time and capital and expensive cutting-edge technologies, some of which are barely commercially viable.

Future energy supplies have never been more uncertain, according to Simmons. It’s difficult to say with specificity how bad things are, he says, because the data are so poor on a worldwide basis.

“Look at what happened with the bad information we had, or didn’t have, with the financial institutions over the past couple of years,” Simmons said at the recent ASPO Conference. “With our energy data, it’s worse. We’re in for some shocks that will change our lives in ways that’ll rival Pearl Harbor.”

Things could go wrong with energy supplies in any of a dozen places, according to Mr. Simmons. In Venezuela, the output of the state oil company PdVSA is declining at alarming rates due to political interference and underinvestment. In Nigeria, the low-grade civil war could quickly morph into a large-scale civil war. In Iraq, according to Mr. Simmons, “They’re in the dark about how to rebuild their oil industry.”

Closer to home, Simmons expects net oil exports from Mexico to vanish within 24 months or less. This event will play havoc with US refiners on the Gulf Coast. Mexico has simply delayed for too long its effort to explore, drill and rebuild its fast-depleting oil resources. Mexico is going to have to scramble to salvage something from its looming energy disaster.

But even without a supply shock, Simmons believes that the mere inevitability of declining production will cause oil to hit $200 a barrel by the end of next year. Longer term, Mr. Simmons expects to see oil at $500-700 per barrel. “People need to understand how expensive it is to obtain oil,” said Simmons.

Much of the world’s energy infrastructure is old and rusting and will require several trillions of dollars to replace – if it can be replaced. Furthermore, new technology is coming on line slower than most people anticipate. The deeper, more challenging environments are sucking down technology and money, and yielding less than expected in many cases. According to one study, only eight out of 100 major energy projects came in on time, were within budget and yielded the expected volumes of oil and natural gas.

The stark fact is that oil is going to get a lot more expensive and the bull market in oil will be firmly in place for a long time. Smart investors would take advantage of any corrections or dips to get themselves buckled-in for the ride.

Citibank Sends Out 2 Million Letters

Hi Mish,

I got a Citibank letter last week raising my interest rate to 29.99% from 7.99%. I have a 780 credit score and pay my account off every month. My limit was $18,200. I never made a late payment to Citibank (or anyone else).

When I called them to either maintain my current terms or opt-out, the rep told me she had been getting nothing but complaint calls all day. She said Citibank had sent out 2 million such letters. I was given one choice: accept the new terms or have my account canceled upon its expiration of 12/31/09. I told them to cancel the account.

The “hail Mary” you describe is even larger than you imagined.

First Premier Banks Offers Card With 79.9 Percent Rate

Gordon Hageman couldn’t believe the credit card offer he got in the mail.

“My first thought, it was a mistake,” Hageman said.

The wine distributor called the number on the offer, gave them the offer code and verified his information. Sure enough, it was right: the pre-approved credit card came with a 79.9 percent APR.

Yes, 79.9 percent.

The offer is for a Premier card from First Premier Bank, which is based in South Dakota. On its Web site, First Premier says it is the country’s 10th largest issuer of Visa and MasterCard credit cards. The site also says it “focuses on individuals who have less than perfect credit but are actually still creditworthy.”

According to information on the South Dakota Legislative Web site, there is “no maximum or usury restriction.” In other words, the individual bank can set its own interest rate limits.

Several calls made to First Premier for a comment were not returned.

Banks Scream To Be Regulated

If ever there were screams of “Please Regulate Me” these actions by First Premier and Citigroup must be at the top of the list.

Stories like these are piling in from everywhere all over the internet. Yet, it is the Citigroup stories that seem to be jacked up more frequently without reason.

I just checked my United Plus Chase Credit Card and it is 13.15%. I don’t carry a balance, except by accident (a bill comes in while on extended vacation). I think 13.15% is high.

29.99% across the board actions is absurd. It is also begging Congress for rate caps.

Some have Emailed me telling me this is nothing but greed. Others said this is nothing but preemptive action by banks to raise rates before new credit card protection laws go into effect.

I am sure there is a lot preemptive action happening. However, Citi’s mass sending of 2 million letters, Citi’s canceling of Gas-Linked cards and Citi’s jacking of rates for virtually no reason on some accounts suggests other problems.

Email From A Collections Specialist

Inquiring minds will wish to consider the following email from “MM” who works in the financial industry. “MM” has a collections background. This Email is also in regards to Citigroup’s “Hail Mary Pass”: How To Know Citigroup Is In Serious Trouble.

Hello Mish

I wanted to clarify Karl Denninger’s comments regarding Citigroup’s 10% defaults on their credit cards.

I work in the financial industry, and have a heavy collections background. ‘Defaults’ is a loosely used term. For example, when my company says it has x% defaults, it is in reference to the number of loans. Karl seems to be assuming 10% is measured against fees, or what other people call revenue. This is not an accurate way of measuring true losses.

Here is a practical example to illustrate my point. At my company, if we give out 3 $100 loans and charge $10 per loan, we generate $30 in fees or revenue; However, we still have to get the $300 back we lent.

If one of those loans defaults, that is a 33% default rate, but the practical impact to revenue is a loss of $270.

So, while the default rate is 33%; the loss is $270. Karl is assuming the 10% of defaults is measured against revenue. It could just as easily be calculated against the principal. You have to check their annual report and go through their math, because default is not universally calculated the same way.

Thus, that 10% default could be exponentially much larger than Karl is characterizing. In fact, I would be willing to bet it is, because I have a friend who worked in the credit card industry for 15 years, and he was telling me his company uses the term default the same way we do.

Credit Card Panic

The actions by Citigroup smack of panic. That panic is likely to backfire.

Those who have other cards can simply stop using their Citicard as “HG” did. Even those without other cards may simply tell Citigroup to go to hell by stop using the card.

Those in real trouble probably do not care and have no intent to pay anyway.

Add that all up and what you have is a scenario in which Citibank (and anyone else following the same misguided rate-jacking policy) is going to drive good business away while keeping the bad business.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Think these rate-jacking actions are going to spur sales at Christmas? I don’t. Rising unemployment does not help one bit either.

Many people will look at those jacked-up rates and not buy. Some will not even have a choice because of slashed limits and canceled cards.

This Christmas is setup to be worse than last because of reduced credit lines, canceled cards, and rates that amount to usury. Last year was one of the worst in retail Christmas seasons in history.

Citigroup has no idea what it is doing. It would already be history had it not been for taxpayer bailouts. Yet….

It’s A Good Thing

• To the extent that these jacked-up rates cause people to stop buying, it’s a good thing.
• To the extent that canceled cards cause people to stop buying, it’s a good thing.
• To the extent that these actions cause people tell greedy banks where to go, it’s a good thing.
• To the extent that these actions cause people just give up, stop paying ridiculous rates, and declare bankruptcy, it’s a good thing.

Thank You Citi-Grinch.

The same thanks go to every other bank that jacked up rates. The odds are this will be the final incentive for many to get out of the debt slavery trap they are in. The more people that cut up their cards and tell banks to go to hell, the better off we will all be, and that’s a good thing.

While several sites yesterday highlighted or even celebrated the overall drop in Americans’ belief that AGW is a major threat, as chronicled in this poll, this more disturbing nugget from the same poll did not receive the attention I believe it merits:

So, we have (1) an AGW propaganda campaign that more and more people are realizing is absolute hooey, and (2) a Kelptocrat federal government bent on enacting the most repressive tax ever conceived, using that absolute AGW hooey as justification, and (3) a populous that will blissfully follow the Euro-lemmings right off the cliff because they Know NOTHING about What The Kleptocrats Are Doing.

Question Time and the Nick Griffin debacle

I was an advocate for allowing Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time. The principle of freedom of speech is important, and exposing the arguments of people like Griffin allow them to be rebutted. Afterwards I definitely feel that was the correct view.

The run up to recording handed a significant amount of credibility to the BNP, the protests descended to the same level as the BNP are accused of and validated their position.  Stifling debate is never healthy, it fuels the feeling that something valid is being suppressed.

So the show itself: one star, one bumbling clown one fair political performance and two mediocre. Unfortunately the show turned into a critique of the BNP, not an opportunity to showcase BNP policies. That was a pity, it hands Griffin some opportunities to claim that he was stifled and it reinfirces the view that the next election should only be about race and immigration.

In general it was effective in exposing the BNP, although I’m sure that the party will communicate it in a positive way.   A main point for me was whether this will help in communicating with their target demographic, and undermine support to the BNP.  Was the target demographic watching or did the whole circus merely reinforce our own various prejudices for an against the party?

Griffin was extremely weak, visibly uncomfortable throughout and with an inappropriate, pretty incongruous, smile despite being undermined by both panel and audience.   His increasingly desperate self justifications indicated a man knowing he was on the defensive.

Bonnie Greer was outstanding, hitting such a note of condescension that I had visions of Griffin patted on the head and scolded. Her illustrations of how weak his understanding of genetics and history were calm, measured and cutting.

Jack Straw started badly with a scripted ranting diatribe, but later came into his own.   Baroness Warsi had her moments but was well off message on a number of points.   Chris Huhne was a serious disappointment, he may as well not have been there.

What we did get was plenty of illustration of how intellectually weak the BNP position is. One wonders who Griffin believes has been “here” for 17000 years and must assume that he doesn’t realise that the Anglo-Saxon is a result of population movements across the North Sea.  That said, I hope he was paying attention to the history lesson that he got, indicating that he was claiming to be a Neanderthal.

There were valid audience questions about the failure of the political establishment to encompass those now dissatisfied enough to elect the BNP, but none of the three politicians grasped that particular nettle.

On balance offering Griffin a platform was a good thing, he got roundly hammered.   But the main parties need to really exploit the opportunity coming out of this.

I’m not confident that they can.

First They Came for Fox

The White House stopped providing guests to ‘Fox News Sunday’  (Last August) after Wallace fact-checked controversial assertions made by Tammy Duckworth,assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, in August. Dunn said fact-checking an administration official was “something I’ve never seen a Sunday show do.”

“She criticized ‘FOX News Sunday’ last week for fact-checking –fact-checking — an administration official,” Wallace said Sunday.”They didn’t say that our fact-checking was wrong. They just said that we had dared to fact-check.“

London Telegraph:

On Sunday, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said this on CNN:

The way the president looks at it, we look at it is:  It’s not a news organisation so much as it has a perspective. And that’s a different take. And more importantly, is not have the CNNs and the others in the world basically be led in following Fox, as if what they’re trying to do is a legitimate news organisation.

And top adviser David Axelrod said this on ABC:

It’s really not news.  It’s pushing a point of view. And the bigger thing is that other news organisations, like yours, ought not to treat them that way, and we’re not going to treat them that way.

In some respects, I suppose that all’s fair in love, war and politics. I don’t really blame them for trying this on – though Axelrod, as a former journalist, must in his heart of hearts feel pretty grubby when reciting this particular talking point. What’s really wrong is letting them get away with it.

Basically, the White House doesn’t want stories like ACORN and Van Jones – legitimate, even necessary, stories which Fox bravely pursued with immense vigour – taking hold. The media will be more compliant, it hopes, if it introduces a chill factor – “Why are you asking this impertinent question about a story which is being run on Fox, which we all know isn’t a news organisation?”
As Tom DeFrank, a veteran Washington journalist now DC bureau chief of the New York Daily News, comments:
I can never remember a White House urging news organizations to boycott other news organizations. That strikes me as unprecedented.

Journalists have a duty to reject this brazen attempt to dictate to the media just who is legitimate and who is not and how we should treat whoever the US government tells us is illegitimate. Where does this lead to?

Depressingly, there are some journalists who should know better eagerly dancing to the White House’s tune on this one. Here’s Newsweek’s Jacob Weisberg:

Whether the White House engages with Fox is a tactical political question. Whether we journalists continue to do so is an ethical one. By appearing on Fox, reporters validate its propaganda values and help to undermine the role of legitimate news organizations.Respectable journalists—I’m talking to you, Mara Liasson (NPR)—should stop appearing on its programs. A boycott would make Ailes too happy, so let’s try just ignoring Fox, shall we? And no, I don’t want to come on The O’Reilly Factor to discuss it.

Thankfully, there are other methods of deligitimising them.

Michael Wolf (Vanity Fair) on his blog put it this way:

Hence, Republicanism = conservatism = Fox = rabid opposition to an incredibly popular piece of legislation (Health Care Reform) = hopeless marginalization = new liberal consensus.

I think they’re really going for it and that we may all turn out to be liberals.

So protesting them on any level, by anyone, is “Un-American”.

That’s your post-partisan America that Obama promised. He just didn’t say that the reason there’d be no partisanship is because it would not be allowed because it’s Un-American.

Obama: “resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long”; that “the times are too serious, the stakes are too high” for the same old political-attack tricks; and that he alone would elevate public discourse and serve as a unifying figure for America.”

If I were to say : This whole gambit will come across to a lot of people as misguided and petty, the product of a White House that is unusually thin-skinned and somewhat paranoid – and, perhaps, as one that can’t be trusted with power.

Would I be talking about Bush/Cheney (according to the Mainstream Media and the Democrats for the last 6-8 years) or Obama for the last 9 months?

Hmmm?

Maybe it’s a “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” after all…

Those journalists sitting this one out need to ask themselves what they will do when the White House comes after them or their news organisation.

Because if Fox is allowed to be placed out of respectable bounds in this way then when the going gets tougher – as it will – the White House will simply move on to another target.

And it’s not like this administration has any tolerance for anyone who opposes them for any reason.

On page 198, after discussing America’s shortcomings, Brzezinski writes: “America is undergoing a new revolution” which “unmasks its obsolescence.” We disagree; America is not becoming obsolete.

On page 260, he proposes “Deliberate management of the American future…with the…planner as the key social legislator and manipulator.” The central planning he wants for our country is a cardinal underpinning of communism and the opposite of the way things are done in a free country.

On page 296, Mr. Brzezinski suggests piecemeal “Movement toward a larger community of the developed nations…through a variety of indirect ties and already developing limitations on national sovereignty.” Here, we have the same proposal that has been offered by Richard Gardner in the CFR publication Foreign Affairs.

Brzezinski then calls for the forging of community links among the United States, Western Europe, and Japan; and the extension of these links to more advanced communist countries. Finally, on page 308 of his 309-page hook, he lets us know that what he really wants is “the goal of world government”. …”

Yet in the miniscule amount of coverage the press has given to Feldblum’s nomination, that issue has yet to be raised.

No, there’s no double standard there.

As far as Roe v Wade, don’t even get me started.

How could I not have a have a problem with someone who once served as a legal council for the ACLU, an organization that, among dozens of other despicable actions, filed a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America for their refusal to allow gay scoutmasters?

As the father of an Eagle Scout, that is pushing the gay rights agenda just a bit too far.

She wants to “revolutionize the country’s social mores.”

Healthcare... Have the Dems Worn You Out?

I am afraid that we have been proven right.  I have attended five Tea Party type events this year and the theme, for most of the people I talked to was, “it all about control”.  At the very first Tea Party event on April 15th, it was TARP and the Omnibus spending plan that were front and center in the targeted anger.  That is interesting to note as TARP was passed under the leadership of the GOP and Omnibus was under the leadership of the Democrats.  Healthcare reform (or take over) was still on the “far-off” drawing board with Cap and Trade.  Two big bad bills looming in, what we hoped, was a very distant future.  If only……..

 Fast forward to the end of September and look at where we are now.  Cap and Trade was rammed through the House of Representatives and the Healthcare legislation has at least four different bills floating around.  “We the People” did our job throughout the summer with our phones calls and emails, and we certainly made our position know loudly and clearly through our unprecedented town hall participation.  Oh yes, we read up on as much as we could, we made no pretences as to our positions, we fought hard all summer, and ended with a massive march on Capitol Hill.    And what has happened since?  Have our Representatives decided to actually listen to us and to do what we demanded of them?  No, they most certainly have not.  In fact, they are now putting a gag order on Humana, a private business, which prevents Humana from passing on information to its customers that is backed up by the CBO!  That is correct!  Humana is not lying to its customers, they are passing on information that has been verified by the Congressional Budget Office, yet the long and ever far reaching arm of the Federal Government has told them to “shut up”. 

 If only that were the only thing that was obscene about the moves made since the August recess.  Now, what is referred to as the Baucus bill will include not only a substantial fee, but possible JAIL TIME for people who do not purchase insurance.  Let us think about that for a moment.  It has been shown through interviews and speeches that President Obama, Representatives Pelosi and Frank, and Senators Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich to name a few, are all supportive of a single payer health system.  The problem is, the American people do not agree.  The American people want healthcare reform not a “government takeover”.  So what is the solution?  Why those is simple, force the public into a single payer system over a period of time and do that by making the current system so obnoxious that people begin to think there is no other option.  Boom, there it is.  They gain full control and we are stuck with it.  If this were not the case then why would they be opposed to the options such as opening up state borders and tort reform that would cost the American public nothing?  Why would they be opposed to free market solutions?  Why would they be opposed to breaking the bill down into much smaller, less intrusive, easier to read bills?  The answer, I am afraid, is becoming more and more obvious.  They do want to just reform healthcare; they want to completely transform it into something we in this country have never seen before.  They ultimately want to control it, therefore they will not listen to us and reform it slowly with common sense moves.

 What can we do, then?  Are we doomed to accept what they are about to force on us?  I say “NO”.  I say that we must insist that “if” they do what I think they are going to do and use reconciliation to pass this bill, we must demand that the new people we WILL elect in 2010 must immediately begin working to repeal anything that moves healthcare out of our hands and into the hands of the Federal Government.  My friends, I feel we are in for a long fight.  Are you up for it?

Swine Flu, Vaccines, and Mind Control - Part 6

This article is the sixth in a multi-part series to monitor and explain the swine flu, vaccines, and mind control.

Another recent experience left me floored. My 10-year-old daughter is very bright, but she’s bored in school because she gets her work done before everyone else, then sits there with nothing to do. It’s only a matter of time before she starts getting in trouble, in my opinion, so my husband and I started looking for alternative schooling for her. We found Milton Hershey, a private school that is funded through ownership of 50% of Hershey Chocolate. Milton Hershey has about 1800 students right now. Students are separated by school level and gender, and they live on the campus year-round. The children are allowed to spend five weekends home per year, and up to 6 weeks in the summer. They also provide the kids with all medical and dental care, all clothing for school and play, and require them to participate in at least 2 after school activities. When they graduate, they get a large amount of money for college. This year’s top-level students got $80,000 each towards college.

After going through the somewhat invasive application process and sending all the verification to the school, we were called to come down for an interview. We stayed overnight in a tiny motel at MH’s cost. At 7:45 am, we started the interview process. We filled out questionaires, talked to staff, and our daughter was given some testing, including an IQ test. There were two other families there at the same time, and we were all loaded onto a bus and driven to one of the resident halls. The home we toured was occupied by 8 elementary-aged boys, the youngest of whom was only 4! The house was gorgeous, very clean, and probably the largest house I’ve ever seen in my life. I was impressed!

As we walked along, I noticed how everything was TOO perfect. They have 8 little boys living here, yet NOTHING is out of place anywhere? I only have 2 boys, and I find that to be near impossible (I have 4 girls, also). As we walked into the laundry room, it was explained that the children must do the laundry. Fair enough, but they cycle the chores every two weeks, and I’m trying to figure out how that four-year-old manages to read the instructions on how to do the laundry – and when it’s your chore, you have to wash everyone’s laundry, not just your own. Each item has a printed tag with someone’s name on it so it can all be sorted.

We were led down the hallway to see the bedrooms. These, too, were insanely perfect. The “house mother” told us that they inspect the rooms every day, and nothing is allowed to be out of place. She opened a closet door, then said something about that particular boy leaving an item on the closet floor and not keeping his closet clean. (I saw the closet, it was beautiful with one shirt that seemed to have fallen down from a hangar.)

After that we were led back to the admissions office for some lunch, courtesy of Milton Hershey. The food was tasty, and I’m a very picky eater.

During the tour and lunch, we were accompanied by a young man who said he was a Junior at the school. He was also a student employee working for the admissions staff. While we were eating lunch, I asked him some questions, since I’d rather hear from a student who’s living the life rather than the staff who are paid to tout the school’s horn. The boy’s responses alarmed me. Or perhaps more accurately, his DEMEANOR alarmed me. I had noticed that he did not speak unless spoken to, and his answers to anything were brief and to the point. He never answered more than was asked, and once he finished speaking, his eyes returned to the floor. He did look us in the eyes when speaking, but only when speaking. He seemed uncomfortable, although he was kind, friendly, and knowledgable.

One of the medical staff had handed me forms to sign for my daughter’s medical care, if she was accepted to the school. I was fine with all of it, until I got to the vaccine consent form. Milton Hershey requires all students to recieve all available vaccines the entire time the are enrolled. The woman gave me the “fact sheets” that the doctor gives out, including all the ones my daughter has already had, plus one for Hepatitis A, HPV, yearly flu shots, and YES the swine flu shot! At that point I was having major reservations, so I asked if all the staff must also get every shot. I was told no, the staff is not required, just the students, and I said I was not sure I could sign that consent form in good conscience, but my husband and I would discuss it.

A few days later, I left two messages – one for the woman in the medical department, and one for our admissions advisor. Then I waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, someone called me back. My question was whether the religious exemption would be acceptable in leiu of consenting to the vaccines. I was told that since Milton Hershey is not a public school, they are not required to accept any exemptions. I asked what they would do if a child had an egg allergy, and the response was that none of the children have had an egg allergy, but certification from a medical doctor would be accepted, and that child wouldn’t get the flu shot. But all the other ones stand.

Oy vay. I again said that my husband and I would need to discuss this, but that I didn’t think we would be able to consent.

Now we have to decide between giving our daughter an unbelievable education and all the things she needs to be successful, including college, or keeping her home and finding another alternative means of educating her. We’re not opposed to our children working hard for what they get, but this seemed so good! Too good to be true.

Nuffin like a fresh cup of irony to kickstart the day

This morning, I had the pleasure of walking past a road works operation at a busy roundabout. At least 20 cars were banked up on every exit, all stalled until the little man with the sign let them move. Of course, I scoffed at them. Look at all those idiots, I thought to myself. They think they’re so free with their vehicles, but they forget that they only exist within a system: the system of roads. They are at the whim of someone else, and now they are stranded with no power to reverse their plight. But I am truly free, because I walk. I may also exist within a system of land, but my system was not invented by someone else and is controlled by both no one and everyone.

Five minutes after my false feeling of superiority, I boarded a train. And 20 minutes after that, it broke down, leaving me to stare at the platform for 15 minutes as I waited for Queensland Rail’s residant geniuses to restore the power.

Beppe Grillo and V Day

Just to draw attention to a new addition to the blogroll. This is Beppe Grillo’s blog, which I’ve been reading regularly for a couple of weeks now. You can read it in English, Italian or Japanese. Grillo is an Italian comedian who has turned his attention to political reform. He is scathingly critical of the current regime there, to the point that no public Italian TV network wants him on air for fear of attracting the furore of politicians, many of whom have a big hand in the media, not least Berlusconi himself. In spite of this, he is still one of the most famous personalities in Italy, broadcasting over the internet (not easy in Italy, where internet access it quite strictly controlled), and when he did make a rare TV appearance in the 90’s the show got huge viewing numbers.

Here’s an introductory video from the New York Times. I don’t know how to embed it else I would but it’s worth watching, please do come back . I think ‘Va Fan Culo’ (or however you spell it) is now one of my favourite expletives. It translates quite well into the fine Scottish term, “get to fuck”.

Each post will typically have a video which obviously is in Italian, I can understand more or less because I live with an Italian and I’m used to hearing it and translating into Spanish, but there’s a nifty little tool which I’ve grown to love. If you go the the bottom right of the video and turn on captions, then subtitles come up. You can then translate these subtitles into English which I believe uses Google translate (don’t knock it, it used to be crap but it’s got much better in the last few years, although it’s still not perfect). So you can enjoy too. Here’s an example so you can see just how brilliant a public speaker Grillo is, it’s a 25 minute video outlining what the movement wants to do. You don’t have to watch it all, the part about information is the best, that starts at about 16:10.

Anyway there are two things making headlines in Italian politics at the minute. First of all is the so-called ‘Lodo Alfano’ which is a law granting immunity from prosecution to the holders of the four highest offices in Italian politics. Basically it was a means of making Berlusconi not have to face prosecution for his crimes. It works quite well in conjunction with another law which shortened the time limit of prosecutions for some offenses, mainly the ones he and his cronies have been accused of. So if he can avoid prosecutions whilst in office, and he’s been in office for more than 10 years, and a law put through by him means that after 10 years he can’t be prosecuted, well then he’s just getting off scot-free. A select Orwellian quote I read somewhere by one of his supporters was that the Prime Minister should not be seen as a ‘first among equals’ but rather ‘first above equals’. Fortunately this Lodo Alfano got struck down this week by the constitutional court, because it conflicts with an article of the Constitution which says all citizens are equal before the law, and a constitutional amendment would need to be passed to pass the law. Lots of my Italian friends are celebrating this, it seems to me that good news is few and far between in Italian politics.

The other thing is the Fiscal Shield. This is a move designed to allow 300 billion euros to move back into Italy from offshore banks and investments with just a 5% tax, which the additional guarantee of anonymity. I can’t stress how corrupt this is. Basically any money from dodgy dealings, money laundering, mafia money, tax-dodgers etc will be able to reenter the country to create a legitimate-appearing front for any other illegal activities. Brilliant. This one’s still going ahead, and the deputies of the opposition parties were noticably absent from the vote in Parliament. 24 outspoken opponents were absent, and 20 would have been enough to overturn the law, which the government had also turned into a vote of confidence, so it was a monumentally important vote.

Anyway although Grillo and his V Day movement is massive in Italy, I don’t think many people know about it outside of there. I myself had never even heard about it until my Italian flatmate mentioned it. So if you’re interested in this kind of thing, spread the word. There are hordes of like-minded people throughout the rest of the world who can do a lot of damage to the Italian government’s already terrible public image, if only they had a bit of information. It’s in the interest of democracy and liberty, something that humanists should definitely be concerned about.

Do Gun Shows Have Loopholes?

Today’s Nashville Tennessean newspaper’s lead story headline is “NY slams gun show ‘loophole’ in Tenn.” The story is about a purported undercover investigation of gun shows done by the City of New York. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has long been an anti-gun activist.

Apparently, Bloomberg sent investigators to gun shows in Tennessee and other states, using tiny hidden cameras to record what they considered illegal activity. They allege that guns from Southern states are regularly found to be used in felonies in New York, and that it is too easy for criminals to buy guns at gun shows.

The article spotlighted one gun show held in Nashville that attracts 250 gun dealers and up to 10,000 people every month. Gun dealers must be licensed by the Bureau or Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF). Background checks on buyers must be performed by dealers. Penalties for selling guns to felons can include fines and imprisonment for the dealer.

The New York report showed that most dealers were law-abiding and that most sales were legitimate. So, where is this alleged “loophole” in the law?

It’s found in individual liberty and property rights.

Any of the attendees at a gun show are free to offer their own guns for sale to any other attendee. They may not represent themselves as dealers under penalty of law. But nothing prevents them from striking up a conversation with another attendee and offering to sell a privately owned firearm. They also don’t have to be bothered with the firearms registration paperwork that a dealer must complete.

I’ve seen this every time I’ve attended a gun show. There are people walking around with guns on their shoulders with a “for sale” sign attached to the gun. And any time a sale is made by an individual, they simply take their transaction out to the parking lot where the money and firearm changes hands.

No background checks need be done when an individual sale is made. So there is the possibility that an individual could sell a firearm to a felon without the seller’s knowledge. There is also a chance that a buyer could make a firearm purchase on behalf of another person.

But it seems to me that the only “remedy” for this “loophole” is to pass a Federal law which only allows firearms to be bought and sold through licensed dealers. And a law like that would be no remedy at all. It would violate individual property rights in a chilling way.

The solution for crime reduction is to allow any person to keep and bear arms. Armed populations are polite populations. Criminals are far less likely to commit a crime when there is the likelihood that the victim (or someone nearby) will be armed.

So, three cheers for individual liberty and property rights! Hip, Hip, Hurrah!

“Sink schools” exist because the GramscoFabiaNazis have brought them into being on purpose. The justification to create them was the pressing and fast need to de-educate an entire civilisation. Therefore, the punishments for bringing them into being, and which will be retributed from the perpetrators, will be exemplary. I will not say what here: it will be revealed in due course. A whole nation’s schools have been used as machinery for the attempted, and largely successful, de-civilising of that entire nation, for the first time in recorded history. In the 1930s, the NSDAP, while “righting” knowledge to make a similar but craftier “people”, was merely tinkering at the edges: they had a global war to win, and “National Socialist Mathematics” was not going to cut the mustard with people like Stalin and the like, as was borne out by uncomfortable fact. Even with my A-level physics teacher on board for the Allies, it was an effing close-run thing.

It will not do to “close sink schools”: there is not time to resurrect proper ones to take the slack, and the damage will continue to be piled up against us if we do not drain the swamp, cleansing out the Augean Stables of wicked doctrine and “unfit thoughts” on day one.The “Nationalised Curriculum” will go, and knowledge and truth will be substituted.

These schools will have to be operated. But the terms will be initially harsh. The first people to get the point of it – after about Day Three – will be the students, who will be our first adherents and supporters in the plan.

There is such a thing as “political correctness”: and it is not what the Enemy Class says it is. It means being right. And they are wrong, they know it, have done it on purpose, and will have to pay.

My dealer of choice is Long Branch HD in New Jersey.  I have also dealt with Rahway (”Liberty”) HD in NJ, but found them unsuitable.  The salesman I dealt with, Jim, told me it would take 6 weeks to get a 2010 Road King Classic with ABS.  Eddy, the salesman at Long Branch, got one on the floor within 3 days.  Rahway’s parts manager, Chris, is a top-notch guy.  At Long Branch, their parts manager (who goes by – I kid you not – Big Chris), is the best.  He understood my aims for the bike and didn’t take advantage of the situation at all.  I wish I could say that if you walk in and try to spend 5-figures on a bike, they should be content to take it, but SOME people would rather try and milk out every last bit.  And those greedy bitches can kiss my ass, because my bill at the end of the day with Long Branch HD was less than I budgeted.

That said, I have to reserve my final judgment of Long Branch NJ HD until I pick up the bike and see how they performed the work.  I’m not anxious; Eddy knocked the MSRP down for me in light of all the extras I picked up, and Big Chris and I have been on the phone most of last week in order to hammer out all the details.  They’re efficient, professional, and fair.  I expect to be pleased.

For every 10% unemployed there are another 20% that are underemployed, working part-time or have given up. That means more than 30% of our labor force is in big trouble, especially young people.

Worst losses for a year as Taleban storm Nato outpost

It began before dawn — a devastating, well-planned attack. About 300 insurgents swarmed out of a village and mosque and attacked a pair of isolated American outposts in a remote mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan with machineguns, rockets and grenades.

They first stormed the Afghan police post at the foot of the hill in the province of Nuristan, a Taleban and al-Qaeda stronghold on the lawless Pakistan border. They then swept up to the Nato post. The battle lasted all day. American and Afghan soldiers finally repelled them, with the help of US helicopters and warplanes — but at heavy cost.

Eight American soldiers and two Afghan policemen were killed, with many injured. It was the worst attack on Nato forces in 14 months, and one of the deadliest battles of the eight-year war. The insurgents seized at least 20 Afghan policemen whose fate last night remained unclear.

The attack came at a crucial juncture in the war, with President Obama soon to decide whether to accept a request by General Stanley McChrystal, commander of the 100,000-strong US and Nato force in Afghanistan, for 40,000 extra troops, or to reduce the counter-insurgency operation against the Taleban and focus on al-Qaeda.

Domestic opposition to a US “surge” is increasing as the death toll rises. About 400 coalition troops have been killed in Afghanistan this year — the majority of them American. Saturday’s death toll was the highest suffered by Nato’s International Security Assistance Force since August 2008, when ten French troops died in an ambush in Kabul province. It was also the highest inflicted on US troops in Afghanistan since 200 insurgents killed nine Americans in an attack on another remote outpost in the village of Wanat in Nuristan in July last year.

Nato said that it inflicted heavy casualties in the attack but gave no numbers. “This was a complex attack in a difficult area,” Colonel Randy George, commander of the US force in the region, said. “Both the US and Afghan soldiers fought bravely together.”
Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taleban spokesman, said that the insurgents included several suicide bombers and that they captured 35 policemen whose fate would be decided by the movement’s provincial council.

US forces have suffered some of their worst casualties in eastern Afghanistan, where they have sought to control the remote passes that insurgents use to cross the Pakistan border, but they had planned soon to withdraw from the area as part of General McChrystal’s strategy to focus on protecting population centres.

Jamaluddin Badar, Nuristan’s governor, said that the Taleban fighters had moved to the province after being driven from Pakistan’s Swat Valley by Pakistani troops. He said that he sought more security forces for Kamdesh district, adding: “When there are few security forces, this is what happens.”

Yesterday Nato officers were reassessing the security of hundreds of outposts scattered across Afghanistan.

“Everyone is aware of what happened in Nuristan, and checking their outposts are well protected and manned,” said Major Jason Henneke, executive officer of the 10th Mountain Division’s 2-87 Battalion in Wardak province. Major Henneke’s battalion lost two soldiers, with three wounded, late on Friday when an Afghan policeman opened fire on his American colleagues during a joint operation to clear the Taleban from villages around the Nerkh valley.

US and Afghan investigators are trying to determine whether the policeman was a covert member of the Taleban or made a mistake. Either way, the attack fuelled the distrust that many Nato soldiers feel towards the Afghan security forces they are training as part of the coalition’s eventual exit strategy.

“You don’t trust anybody, especially after an incident like this,” said Specialist Raquime Mercer, 20, whose close friend died in the attack.
